Colombo Port City Project: The Environmental Narrative

The Colombo Port City, being developed by the China Harbour Engineering Company, spans 269 hectares of land reclaimed from the sea. It aims to become a premiere residential, retail and business destination in South Asia. Naazima Kamardeen addressed a gap in public understanding about the environmental assessment and impact of this grand project.
Naazima Kamardeen is a Professor at the Department of Commercial Law, Faculty of Law, University of Colombo. Her research interests include intellectual property, biopiracy and traditional knowledge, trade and investment, environment, research ethics and Muslim personal law reform. She was a member of the National Committee that drafted the law on Plant Variety Protection. She has authored the books “Global Trade and Sri Lanka: Which Way Forward?” published in November 2016, and “Biopiracy’s Forgotten Victims: Lessons from Sri Lanka” published in July 2019. Naazima holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, a Master of Laws degree in International Legal Studies from Georgetown University USA, where she studied as a Fulbright scholar, and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. She is also an Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka.
