Sharmini Cooray

Dr. Sharmini Coorey is a former senior official of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and currently serves on the Presidential Advisory Group on Multilateral Engagement and Debt Sustainability, advising the Government of Sri Lanka during its economic crisis. With a 35-year career at the IMF, she held key leadership roles, including Director of the Institute for Capacity Development (ICD), where she spearheaded the IMF’s global capacity-building initiatives, training over 100,000 government officials in policy-oriented macroeconomics. She also served as Deputy Director of the IMF’s African Department, overseeing work on Sub-Saharan Africa and leading financial sector research. Her extensive experience includes surveillance and program work on countries such as the UK, US, Korea, and Mexico. Dr. Coorey holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University and has published on inflation, economic growth, and oil wealth management.
